Standard Ways of Working
What you need to know
Edexcel has set out a list of habits and actions that you should always try to adopt when working.
These are largely common sense but they will help you produce the best work possible and avoid
wasting time by losing work or not having the right files easily accessible.
Both of the portfolios that you will produce for this qualification have marks available for standard
ways of working. You will need to try and show in your work that you have used them. Think about
what evidence you can produce to maximise your marks.
File Management
o Save work regularly - Get in the habit of hitting CTLR S every few minutes and / or set the autosave
for regular intervals.
o Use sensible file names - Never accept defaults. Choose file names that mean something so that you
know what the file contains.
o Set up directory / folder structures to organise files - Have a folder for your Applied ICT work and
sub folders for each unit. Make further sub folders for research material, images etc.
o Make backups - Do not just rely on memory sticks! They are easy to lose and can easily be
damaged. Use an online service such as Google Docs or Dropbox.
o Choose appropriate file formats - The main ones you need to be concerned about are the various
multimedia formats. Choose compressed formats where download speed is an issue. Choose larger
uncompressed formats where quality is more important.
o Limit assess to confidential or sensitive files - Use passwords to protect folders and documents.
o Use effective virus protection - the school system will be updated regularly but don't forget to
ensure that your home computer is also protected.
o Use 'read-me' files where appropriate to provide technical information - use a text file ( e.g.
Notepad ) to record requirements to run any software you produce.
Personal Effectiveness
o Select appropriate ICT tools and techniques - Use the right tools for the job and use automation
where you can e.g. macros, wizards
Customize Settings
o Create and use shortcuts - e.g. icons on the desktop, keyboard shortcuts ( CTLR C , CTLR V etc ), use
of styles and formatting and automated index of pages, templates, macros
o Use available sources of help - your teacher, F1, online help
o Use a plan to help you organise your work and meet deadlines - try Google Calendar and /
or Toodledo or create a Gantt chart
Quality Assurance
o Use spell check, grammar check and print preview - make sure that the work you submit is well
presented and spell checked.
