is the first who really wants to talk about things other than
pleasantries.
She says the U.S. planes were stopping in Shannon on their
way to the gulf during the war. She tells us that she said a
silent prayer every time she heard one fly over, “Please, God,
they come back safe.” She has no love for Saddam and does an
imitation of Schwarzkopf and says, the night he said, “There
was nothing between me and Bagdad” the neighbor was over
and in a Schwarzkopf-like voice said, “Well, why the hell didn’t
you go to Bagdad?” She says if Bush had been president Viet
Nam wouldn’t have dragged on and on. It’s funny to hear
someone imitate an American. I guess I didn’t think of us
being the ones with the accent.
Our B & B is named “St. Patrick’s” and is in another sprawling
ranch house that looks like it has been added on to over and
over like the others we have stayed in. Our host operates a
little grocery in what would be the garage area of the house and
he takes tourists around as a driver. Their little daughter has a
souvenir shop set up in the lounge and she asks if we need
anything. We say we are all shopped out for the day. The
grocery seems to be a busy place. A bell rings continually as
customers enter.
We eat at a newer restaurant in Ennis that our hostess
suggested for a very unexciting meal. Of course after the
fabulous meal at Joe’s, nothing could measure up. It is spitting
rain when we leave and go back to the B & B. Our hostess chats
a while and then leaves us. We can hear the TV in the next
room talking about the grim situation in Northern Ireland.
News about “The Troubles” dominates.
