Later our host tells us about St. Brendan the Navigator who

was, according to legend, the first man to discover North

America. This occurred, the Irish believe, before the Vikings or

Columbus. He says that at the Craggaunowen Project nearby is

a building especially constructed to hold a boat which was built

in 1976, by Tim Severin, to successfully recreate the journey.

We make plans to go there the next day.

I place a credit card call to Mike and an older lady from

Holland and one from Israel join us in the lounge. They have

been at a nearby castle while the nightly banquet was going on

and had been allowed to look in. They found it very

               interesting.

The daughter who has lots of metals for Irish dancing, sits

quietly crocheting a bright orange doily, our hostess and the

Dutch lady chat, our host and the Israeli lady chat, M reads and

I write in my journal waiting for the operator to call back.

The house is pretty typical with its wild patterned carpet and

brocade furniture (at least 6 different

patterns of brocade). Lots of doilies and bric-

a-brac sitting about and pictures hung way

too high up on the walls. They have a Blue
Boy print, a thatched cottage painting, and

the print of the 2 Irish people in the potato

field. They have a beautiful ceramic clock

with pink flowers on the mantle and a lovely

copper teapot on the black marble hearth. I

expect the phone to ring and it will be the

1960’s wanting their orange and green pole

lamp that stands in one corner back.
