One key factor with financial implications in 2024 is whether SURC has a replacement minister.
Another major factor is whether SURC wishes to employ a Mission Enabler for a fourth year
(from August 2024). The Synod are being approached to see if they are prepared to increase
their grant towards a Mission Enabler - especially bearing in mind we are currently without a
Minister and yet still pay the Synod the full M&M Fund.
Based on current commitments, and assuming no major repair costs are forthcoming, I anticipate
Expenditure will exceed Income by around £10,000 in 2024.
Should SURC employ a Mission Enabler for a fourth year from August there will be additional
Expenditure but the amount will depend on what grant can be obtained from the Synod.
Obviously SURC needs to see if there are opportunities to minimise Expenditure and increase
Income.
The possibility of obtaining Synod and non-Synod Grants is again being explored. One option
currently being investigated is Secondary Double Glazing along with “loft” insulation for the large
hall – which once installed would reduce energy cost and improve sound proofing.
One way to potentially increase income which is also being explored is the use of the premises to
generate “external” income (rather than even more income from the current congregation). By
using SURC as an “Arts Centre” and holding regular concerts (choirs, orchestras, bands, etc),
there is an opportunity to not only increase income but introduce a wider group of people to the
church and at the same time potentially achieve more “mission” goals.
These suggestions, and other ideas, are being pursued by the (very busy) Eldership team.
