WAREHAM UNITED REFORMED CHURCH
Light of the World
Dear Friends,
Just recently I lost power in my bedroom for 24 hours. Armed with
a small torch under my pillow, I had to get up in the night, as
people of my age usually do. I switched on the small torch and was
amazed to see how much the light penetrated the darkness. I
needed no other light that night.
It is fair to say that the World is in darkness at present; to listen to
the news is almost unbearable.
The conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East and other places,
Climate Change plus corruption in high places are all very
depressing. After covid, which is still around, we thought we might
have cause for optimism, but human beings put paid to that. We
feel helpless, perhaps only being able to help with prayers or
money.
For Christians, however, there is light in the darkness, like that
small torch which lit up my bedroom. We look forward in this
season to the Light of the World, Jesus, born again for us at
Christmas. 'The light shone in the darkness and the darkness could
not overcome' it says St John (John 1: 5), So we can still rejoice, in
spite of everything that's happening in the World, and in spite of
what personal problems we have, because Jesus is still with us.
Jesus said: 'I am with you always, even to the end of the World'
(Matthew 28:20).
Wishing you every joy for Christmas and the New Year.
Janet
