visited them on many occasions and they kept in regular contact.
Betty would always make sure that there was something nice to
eat and looked after all her visitors.
In 1997, the family helped them move to a flat in Burr Stone Mead
to live nearer to the town. Sadly, Bert passed away in 1998 shortly
after they had moved.
After Bert died, Betty had to rely on others to help her due to her
failing eyesight. Linda, the warden at Burr Stone Mead, went
‘above and beyond’ to help Betty with many things, and Betty was
extremely grateful for her help.
Betty also had a very kind neighbour and friend, Rosemary. They
supported each other and spent lots of time together, especially
enjoying cups of tea and fish and chips on a Friday. Over recent
years Rosemary helped Betty with shopping and Betty relied on
her for lots of things.
During the pandemic Betty became anxious and upset and the
decision was made for her to move to a care home due to her
failing health. She moved to York House in December 2021. She
took a little time to settle in but she was lucky to have such lovely
people to look after and care for her.
The family only knew Betty for a short time, but they will remember
her for many things:
Her fascinating stories
Her knowledge of the news and getting to grips with her iPad
using googlemaps to see places she knew
How she liked to chat, especially to new people and hearing all
about them
Especially her lovely smile and her sense of humour
th
On her 96 Birthday, in July this year, her nieces and nephews
visited her and took her along the seafront to the Mowlem,
enjoying her favourite thing – a cup of tea and a biscuit.
Betty will be sadly missed by all who knew her and loved her, but
we can take comfort in the knowledge that she is now reunited with
her beloved Bert, and safe in the presence of the Saviour in whom
she trusted.
