Identity Chris Webb

I find the current obsession with Identity Politics troubling, leading to more and more division in
society. However, with identity in mind, I felt led to see what identities I have myself, and I wonder
if you will feel inclined to try the same idea. See how many you can come up with! Which are the
most important? (See end of article.) And which have I missed out?

         I am a Quaker, I am a Christian, I am a man, I am a husband, I am a Senior Citizen, I am a
         brother-in-law, I am an uncle, I am a Friend, I am a friend.

I once was a brother, a son, and a grandson.

Those are nouns. Now for some of the adjectives …

I am gay, I am British, I am English, I am white, I am retired, etc. (So many more?)

Here are two quotations which I believe tell us our only true identity …

“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male or female, for you are
all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28 NIV

“In Christ there is no east or west, in Him no south or north, but one great fellowship of love,
throughout the whole wide earth.” William Arthur Dunkerley 1852-1941
