At Spyway Farm in the 19 century the priest would have
                                     th
searched warily for the farmer’s ferocious bull. It was
rumoured that he let the animal roam freely to deter
unwelcome visitors when the smugglers were moving their
cargo. The contraband was stored in the barn at the farm or in
the tower of St George’s Church in Langton, which was built

       in 1390.

John de Mautravers acquired the manor of Langton in 1292.
In 1893, a former teacher at Eton, Thomas Pellatt, bought
land from the estate and started a boys’ boarding school. He
built Langton House in 1927. Famous old boys include Ian

       Fleming and David Niven.
