IT’S A COMMON AUTOMOTIVE TROPE that anyone who drives a Porsche
911 for the first time, becomes an instant fan. For those that haven’t ever
had the pleasure though, the allure is vague. After all, to the untrained
eye the car hasn’t changed all that much over the decades, retaining its
basic shape and price point. Ironically, critiques levied by enthusiasts
are the opposite; the car has strayed too far from its roots by growing
larger, heavier, and more technologically advanced with each passing
year—with the latest 992 generation the worst offender yet. Fortunately,
the 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera is every bit a 911—and those lucky enough
to experience it in person, will still fall in love.
True, the car is longer and wider. However, the new dimensions further
accentuate the familiar windshield and greenhouse while the rear
profile no longer ends in an abrupt stub. The fenders over the back
wheels have been widened, and when viewed from behind the car
appears ready to pounce whether parked or in motion. The design
oozes understated musculature—a heavyweight boxer in a sharply
tailored suit.
