Work has begun on the first phase of
demolition to bring down six blocks
of accommodation comprising 36
properties on the Washdyke Estate.
Blocks to be demolished are: Laceby House,
Barnoldby House, Weelsby House, Hawerby House,
Brigsley House and Great Coates House. Along with
the garages located off Park Close.
Split into two phases, the controlled demolition is
being carried out by specialists DSM Demolition Ltd.
Following very extensive public consultation, plans
for the demolition of 13 blocks were announced last
year. All affected residents were offered rehousing,
home-loss payments, variable disturbance payments
and provided with a designated relocation support
officer to assist in their rehousing.
Not only were the results of the public consultation
considered when making the decision but also the
declining demand for this type of accommodation,
high tenancy turnover, outdated accommodation
in need of modernisation, the impact of the
government’s welfare reforms and the opportunity
for much-needed area regeneration.
