Electrobluessociety Featuring Michael Peters—Hoochie
Coochie Man—Kuvver Kr 615
Here is another single track from this Dutch outfit, with a local
singer turning in a version of the Muddy Waters classic. Some
of these issues on Black & Tan subsidiary label Kuvver have kept
reasonably close to the originals – this one doesn’t. The
throbbing, up tempo backing is largely electronic, though with
pounding drums and some excellent blues guitar, whilst
Michel’s singing is fine. The whole thing does actually work
well, so, if you have a youngster who feels that the blues is old—
hat, try to get them to give this a listen – you never know…

Crawlback Featuring Johnny Bird—Call My Job—001
Crawlback is the name of a South Wales based band led by
Johnny Bird, a 25 years old singer and harmonica player (and
occasional guitarist) but the sound of this extremely impressive
debut set belies the leader's youth. The musical approach brings
to mind someone like Kim Wilson, a fine role model for an up—
and—coming bluesman.
Although there are a few “outside” elements—dub effects on the
cover of Howling Wolf’s ‘44’ and a rap on the rather nice
original composition ‘Cash Flow Problems’—this is most definitely the modern blues. The
inclusion of a blues—wailing jazz cover like Duke Ellington’s ‘Caravan’ should no longer raise any
eyebrows—it is a fine performance whatever. Other borrowed material comes courtesy of Mitch
Kashmar, Junior Wells, William Clarke (another big influence on Johnny), Junior Parker and Lazy
Lester.
In fact, if I have a criticism of this set, it is only that the band should be more confident in writing
their own material. That will come with time, I guess, and it is certainly only a minor complaint
with music this good.
If you want to check this out—and you really should— ry and give the cover of Jimmy Reed’s
‘Found Love’ a listen. Truly wonderful!
