HAVE JAZZ FESTIVALS GOT THE BLUES?
A Preview of this year’s Jazz Jurassica in beautiful Lyme Regis, known as ’The Pearl of Dorset’.
The answer to the question above, is surely, an emphatic
“yes”. Jazz doesn’t exist without the blues, and vice versa.
They share deep common roots - musical and cultural -
Elles Bailey
and the love of a great groove.
A case in point is rising blues star, Elles Bailey. She will
appear at Jazz Jurassica in Lyme Regis for the first time
this June, hot on the heels of her headline slot at
Cheltenham Jazz Festival.
Elles is a multi-award winning blues singer whose recent
album, Shining in the Half Light, has wowed both fans
and critics alike.
There's a bulging roster of blues artists in this year’s Jazz Jurassica line up.
The Festival also features ex-Communards singer, Sarah
Jane Morris. Her tribute to the late, great, John Martyn,
"Sweet Little Mystery" has won 5 star reviews and a
sell-out run at Ronnie Scott's. Martyn himself was, of
course, no slouch when it came to blurring the boundaries
of jazz and blues.
Sara Jane Morris with Tony Remy Vintage-blues duo from Italy, Veronica and Max, play old
and Tim Canfield time blues on
ukulele,
washboard, kazoo, and guitar as they invoke 20s and 30s jug
band music.
On the Lyme seafront there will be more treats for blues fans
- and all for free. The line-up includes Adam Sweet Band (a
former student at the Woodroffe School in Lyme), Zoe
Max and Veronica
Schwarz, and Russell Sinclair.
A late addition to the bill is Mick Taylor (no, not that one).
He's former editor-in-chief of Guitarist magazine and co-presenter of "That Pedal Show".
It all goes to show that a so-called jazz festival has more than a few blues licks up its sleeve!
