broke through the fear and allowed
me to just feel just so relaxed in his
presence because he is such an artist.
It is all about the music. There is no
ego. There's no pressure. The creation
is a journey and I felt like we were
taking this journey together. There
was such positivity, and he let me
start with what I thought would be
the hardest song because I thought if
I could break the ice with this song,
then everything after that's going to
be smooth sailing, and it was. And
because Robin was so generous with
his compliments and with what he
thought I was bringing to the songs
and how it was inspiring his guitar
playing, that all of a sudden, all of that
fear was gone. It was completely
gone. And from that point on, we were
both able to move forward in just the
most beautiful, cooperative, inspiring
collaboration that I've ever
experienced.
BiTS: Did you have a chance to learn
the songs before you went into the studio, or did you actually learn them whilst you
were working on them?
SS: Yeah, good question. So yes, Robin sent me acoustic versions of the songs with
him playing acoustic guitar and singing the vocal so that I could tell him yes or no if
I wanted to do the song. But it wasn't until I got into the studio where I heard the
recordings and they just came alive with Robin and Chris Taggart on drums and Robin
cut a lot of the bass parts too, which, as the songwriter, he knew exactly what he
wanted to get from each song, and it was so easy to step into these songs. They were
so well crafted and he somehow, and I don't know how he did, like some kind of
magic, he was able to get into my head and write lyrics that I would want to say. And
because of that, it was very easy to sing the songs because they were my stories too.
I hope other people will feel the same way.
BiTS: Do you have a favourite from the album?
SS: It's a tough one, but you know ‘I'll Be Moving On’ is one of my favourite tracks
because it has so many of the different influences.
