BiTS:
Well I never did. That's wonderful stuff. I gather now you've moved on to Charlie Musselwhite
(left). I must say I did an interview with Charlie Musselwhite, maybe three years ago now. What
a lovely man. Absolutely delightful. How did you get to work with Charlie Musselwhite?
AJBJ:
I was with the Silent Partners with
Russell and Tony and we were
touring on a double bill with Charlie,
the band and Charlie and at that
time Russell and Tony and I were
having differences, so I decided I
was coming back to Texas and
maybe try to get me a record deal.
Charlie called me before I left for
Texas and told me that if I'm
leaving, he would like to start a
band with me. We put a band
together and that's how I ended up
with Charlie. But I met Charlie on
several sessions also. We recorded
on Sonny Rhodes’ album together
and that's when I really met him.
BiTS:
And you did three albums with him as well, I think.
AJBJ:
Yes, I did. Ace of Harps, Signature and In My Time.
BiTS:
That's wonderful. Tell me about your solo album, the first one that came out in 1997. What
provoked you into doing that?
AJBJ:
Well, actually I came back to Texas after I left Charlie and about six months later, a local DJ who
had always been in my corner, sent word to me that he could get me a record deal like yesterday.
John Stedman and JSP had talked to him about maybe signing me to do a solo record. Actually,
the criteria was for me to write all the songs. They had to be original and I had to sing them, so
that's how I got the first record deal solo project, was with JSP and John Stedman.
BiTS:
The first time I heard you was when I was actually living and working in Fort Worth and I know
Don O on KNON was a huge fan of yours because he did an interview with me.
AJBJ:
Well, he was the one that got me a contract with John Stedman.
