LEON REDBONE
Although his fans included people like Bob Dylan and other mega-stars, Leon never
really hit the mainstream of ‘fame’. Born Dickran Gobalian
in Cyprus 1949, he was of Armenian origin and moved to
Canada. He made his first appearance in the early 1970’s.
Known for his laid back approach and tunes from the
late 1800’s into the 1900’s, his guitar playing would
leave many mouths wide open and, although he
played mainly rhythm at his shows, when he did break
out into solos you’d probably want to sell your guitar.
I guess if you are of ‘a certain age’ his music would have more
appeal, because maybe it’s possible you remember the origi-
nals!!
My first Leon Redbone album was “Double Time” (1977)
quickly followed by the 1978
release of “Champagne Charlie”.
Since then, the following
have been added….
“Red To Blue” (1987)
“No Regrets” (1988)
“Sugar” (1990)
“Up A Lazy River” (1992)
“Whistling In The Wind” (1994)
“Anytime” (2001)
*Christmas Island” (1989 / 2003)
There are others I’ve yet to find and purchase but these should give you a start.
Leon Redbone passed away in 2019 at the age of 69.
