BiTS: That’s wonderful stuff. I like that [laughing]. I wasn’t expecting music during the
interview. Absolutely fantastic.
KM: Ian, you have to pry that guitar out of Bill’s hands. You know how that goes [laughing].
BJ: Well, we’re always finding connections. That’s what the beautiful thing about music is,
when you learn about a song and then you dig a little bit deeper, you can find out where its
roots are, and you discover another layer.
BiTS: Yes. Absolutely. Okay, let’s move on a bit. Kathy, you got your own band. The name
Kathy Murray and The Kilowatts is an absolutely fabulous name. Where did that come
from?
KM: My first band was called The Jaguars and boy were we green [laughing], so we made all
our mistakes and then I formed a new band and I kept the bass player from the first band
and he’s a really good friend of mine here in Austin named Rusty Keith, and he was the one
that came up with the name Kathy and The Kilowatts and I’m pretty sure that was more
than 40 years ago because Bill and I have been together for 40 years. People had always
encouraged me. They liked the succinct sound of Kathy and The Kilowatts, so I stayed with
that. I kind of always, as a songwriter, wanted my last name in the band, and recently I don’t
know if you heard that I was nominated for co-writing a song and nominated for a Grammy
and a blues music award and I thought with this last album I’m definitely officially going
with the name Kathy Murray and The Kilowatts.
BiTS: That song that you were nominated for ‘All My Dues Are Paid’, yes?
KM: Yes. Co-written with Kid Andersen, Rik Estrin and, of course, the late Frank Bey.
BiTS: Absolutely terrific song.
KM: What an honour that was.
