BJ: Currently, our band is just four-piece.
KM: Yes, our road band is four-piece, stripped-down killer musicians.
BJ: We like to keep it simple so we can feature Kathy’s songs and people can hear the vocals
and not be overridden by too much other stuff.
BiTS: What about travelling to Europe and coming to the UK sometime? Is that in your sights
at all?
KM: It absolutely is and one thing I’m hoping this interview might lead to something like that.
BiTS: [Laughing] Well, let’s hope it does.
KM: Exactly. Exactly. We play every month at this wonderful club called C-Boys Heart & Soul
and Steve Wertheimer, wonderful club owner. He owns three clubs here in Austin and he
created C-Boys in tribute to C-Boy Parks, that was the proprietor of the iconic Rome Inn,
where Stevie Vaughan, Jimmie Vaughan and early Kathy and the Kilowatts, we cut our chops
there. We just feel like we’re just coming full circle. We play every month, first Saturday at C-
Boys Heart & Soul and people seem to know about that club because every time we play, there
are people from Europe and other parts of the world at C-Boys. And they always tell us you
need to come over to Europe. I haven't
been, but I would love to.
BiTS: Well, we’ll have to see what we can
do. I have, unfortunately, no power in this
whatsoever, but I’ll certainly do my best to
get your name to the forefront.
KM: Thank you so much.
BJ: We’re not trying to reinvent the blues.
We’re just trying to keep the ball rolling.
BiTS: Yes, good for you. That’s the way to do it. As a matter of fact, I was reading just this
morning somebody complaining about the expression “keeping the blues alive” because it
suggests that there’s something about it dying and there’s no sign of it dying in my view at all.
KM: None [chuckling]. We’re always going back to the well of all the masses, Lightnin’ Hopkins
and every time we hear it, we hear something new. It’s just amazing.
BiTS: Yes, ain’t that the truth. There’s so much of that great music out there. I make two radio
programmes every week and I’m just overwhelmed by the amount of stuff that there is
available. I mean good, high-quality stuff as well.
KM: Yes. Well, thank you so much for broadcasting good music.
BJ: It’s DJs like you that keep us going back to the well—to the originals—to look for different
things to learn.
BiTS: And thank you both for making such good music. That’s an ideal point to stop
[laughing]. Thanks very much indeed. Have a great day.
KM: Alright, you too, Ian.
BJ: Bye.
BiTS: Bye.
