STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE Research Administration SOP No: A007
SOP Title: Children’s Clinical Research Advisory Committee (CCRAC)
NOTE: Graduating fellows should apply for the Early Career Research Award and not the Fellow Research Scholar Award.
Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
Applicants must have sufficient protected research time (at least 75%) during the award period to complete the proposed project. Fellows who are currently in a clinical training year may apply provided that they will have at least 75% protected research time at the start date of the award period. Applicants from other institutions may apply provided they will commence fellowship at Children’s prior to the funding start date
Fellows in the final year of fellowship are encouraged to apply for the Early Career Research Award. Fellows in the penultimate year of fellowship may apply, provided that they provide a letter from their division head or department chair attesting to continued support for the applicant after completion of the fellowship.
5.4.2 Applicants applying under the Early Career Research Award category should be Instructors or Assistant Professors in the initial five years of their faculty appointment. Applicants should be committed to an academic research career and should be in the process of becoming independent. It is anticipated that this award will be the basis for future independent extramural support. Consequently, applicants who hold, or have previously held, an R01, or similar grant, are not eligible for this award. Investigators who have previously held independent extramural support should consider applying for one of the Senior Investigator awards (if they meet the eligibility criteria). Investigators with a current K08 grant are eligible to apply for this award.
Early Career applicants must be members in good standing of the Children’s Medical Center medical, dental, nursing, or other health professional staff. Individuals who are being recruited from other institutions are also eligible provided that at the time the funding becomes effective they are members of the faculty of UT Southwestern or the professional staff at Children’s Medical Center.
5.4.3 Applicants applying under the Senior Investigator Bridge Award category should be an Assistant Professor (beyond 5 years of the initial faculty appointment), Associate Professor, or Professor. The applicant should be seeking funding for a worthy research project but suffer from a gap in funding. The quality and importance of the project should support the likelihood that the gap will be of short duration.
Applicants must be members in good standing of the Children’s Medical Center medical, dental, nursing, or other health professional staff. Individuals who are being recruited from other institutions are also eligible provided that at the time the funding becomes effective they are members of the faculty of UT Southwestern or the professional staff at Children’s Medical Center.
5.5 Review Process
All applications go through a review process. Reviewers can include members of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC), peers and division heads.
The Medical Director of Research Administration distributes applications to primary and secondary reviewers who are selected at random in the specialty area of the applicant.
