2019 CIRCLE OF DISTINCTION

THE OCCASION

JABBERWOCK IS TRADITION. Jabberwock is taken from “Jabberwock”, the name of a
poem in the children’s classic, Alice in Wonderland. It originated in Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority around 1925 as a teen development and community outreach project. It has since
evolved into one of the Sorority’s most popular fundraising activities.

JABBERWOCK IS COMPETITION. Young ladies in the Junior and Senior classes in area
high schools aspiring to further their education compete for the title of “MISS JABBER-
WOCK”. The winner and runners-up are determined by the amount of money reported by
the young ladies.

JABBERWOCK IS PAGEANTRY. The Jabberwock coronation spotlights each contestant
in royal splendor. The winners are crowned and presented to the audience.

JABBERWOCK IS EXCITEMENT. The money raised by each contestant is collected
during a fundraising campaign and tallied by an independent accountant. The winners are
revealed for the first time during the Jabberwock program. Who will win this year’s crown?

JABBERWOCK IS ENTERTAINMENT. After the greetings, the audience is entertained by
contestants.

JABBERWOCK IS COMMUNITY OUTREACH. The proceeds from Jabberwock are used
for scholarships. Each contestant receives 85% of her reported amount. The remaining 15%
