to
Soror Penelope Rogers Vaughan
Soror Penelope ‘Penny’ Leigh Rogers Vaughan joined the Omega Ome-
ga Chapter March 1, 2021. A past chapter president, Soror Vaughan
was a long-time member of Rocky Mount Alumnae Chapter. During
her many years of service to Delta, she was also a former member of the
Enfield-Roanoke Rapids Alumnae Chapter.
Her formal education began at T. S. Inborden School and she graduat-
ed from Enfield High School. Her post-secondary education included
matriculation at Hampton Institute (now Hampton University),
Hampton, Virginia where she earned a Bachelor of Nursing Degree.
Soror Vaughn embodied the school’s purpose “Trained to teach and lead others by example with
skilled hands for support and sake of character.” In a professional career that spanned 35 years at
Nash General Hospital as a Critical Care RN, hospital supervisor, and nurse manager, she touched
the lives of many nursing students, staff members, and patients. She retired as the Endoscopy Unit
Director at Nash Day Hospital in 2012.
Soror Vaughan was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority through the Gamma Iota Chapter at
Hampton University in 1976. She served the Rocky Mount Alumnae Chapter for more than 20 years
in many capacities. She was chapter president of Rocky Mount Alumnae from 2005-2007 and vice
president from 2001-2003. During her presidency, RMAC adopted the following programs: Relay for
Life and the America Heart Walk. Soror Vaughan regularly attended National Conventions and
South Atlantic Regional Conferences as a Delegate, Alternate Delegate, and Non-Voting Delegate.
th
Her presence did not go unnoticed at the 100 Centennial and Founders Day Celebration, N.C. State
Meetings, area Founders Day, or South Atlantic Region Anniversary Celebration. She loved her so-
rority and delighted in serving on various committees to include the following: Membership Services
(Chair), Annual HIV Caregivers & Awareness Program (Co-Chair), Fundraiser, Jabberwock Steer-
ing, Founders Day, and International and Awareness. We remember Soror Vaughan for her role as
Co-chair of RMAC’s first ‘Theater Day’ that organized bus trips to see The Lion King in Norfolk, Vir-
ginia and The Color Purple in New York. She co-chaired our first gala in 1998. Soror Vaughan would
serve as chapter pianist when needed and was a member of the Violette Ensemble.
A Golden Life member and a Darling Delta Dear with 43 years of membership in the sorority, Soror
Vaughan continued her community public service involvement, in spite of her health challenges,
with exceptional loyalty. A life well lived, she embodied sisterhood, service, and scholarship. Sorors
were encouraged by her strength, courage, and conviction. She was a dedicated and faithful warrior
for Delta Sigma Theta, and one of her final loving actions was to have memorial contributions sent to
RMAC Scholarship Fund.
She will be truly missed by her devoted husband, Neuward, with whom she shared an amazing forty
-two and a half years and remembered by all who knew her for her unselfish love for her church, ex-
tended family, community, and friends.
