Jabberwock Chairperson
Greetings,
It is with genuine excitement and joy, that I welcome you to our 2021 Jabberwock
Scholarship Program. The idea of Jabberwock comes from the poem told by Lewis
Carroll in his famous book, Alice in Wonderland. The Jabberwock, a mythical char-
acter, called together the members of his kingdom at least once a year to put on a
show. In a like manner, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. calls its members and com-
munity together to enjoy an evening of celebrating our youth.
Due to the advent of COVID-19, the past year has presented both challenges and setbacks to our signature
program; however, Rocky Mount Alumnae has risen to the occasion to continue the legacy and tradition that
Jabberwock holds in our community. Our Sorority has been a pillar in the community for 74 years, and we
st
are proud to host our 41 Jabberwock Scholarship Program. The Rocky Mount Alumnae Chapter of Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has endeavored to create a virtual program that represents the creativity, academic
achievement, and talent of our “Pearls on the Rise.”
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with intelligent, accomplished, and beautiful young ladies
from various high schools who have accepted the challenge to be “great”! Key activities offered during our Jab-
berwock process included cultural, educational, financial, and social awareness workshops. “Pearls on the
Rise… Destined to be Great!” displays the commitment of nine young ladies as they showcase their talents,
dedication, and hard work to family, friends, and community members. Today’s program exemplifies Rocky
Mount Alumnae’s founding principles and most importantly provides each participant with the opportunity
to achieve post-secondary goals by participating in our educational, scholarship, and fundraising activities.
I would like to thank everyone who graciously donated their time, talent, and service to our Jabberwock
scholarship program. To our participants, parents, family members, patrons, sponsors, sorors, committee
members, and friends, I am appreciative and grateful for your steadfast support, encouragement, and commit-
ment to making our first virtual Jabberwock program a reality. To all in attendance virtually, we thank you
for gracing us with your presence and we hope that you enjoy our program.
With gratitude,
Chanda Daniels-Davis
