❖ A brief overview of the project
I had two projects; In the first one I had to perform forecast
accuracy analysis on the 3000 SKUs sold in Welspun’s USA
warehouse. Then find the reasons for inaccurate forecasts
and suggest better forecasting approaches. The other
project was reduction of warehouse replenishment lead
time from 90 days to 60 days. This was achieved by
preponing the ordering of raw materials using an increased
horizon forecast. Reduction of lead time also led to a
decrease in the safety stock held at warehouses.
❖ How is a normal day at the Internship?
ABHIJEET ALURKAR My internship was in Lower Parel(Mumbai) and I used to
commute from my home at Thane. I tried to reach as early
WELSPUN as possible to have more time for my project. I shared a

would make a mental note of what I needed to get done
GENERAL INFORMATION that day. For data collection and any doubts that I had
regarding my project I had to talk to the supply chain team
Batch: PGDIE 48 of exports division. The supply chain team used to sit on a
different floor, and they did not have a spare workstation
BTech: K.J. Somaiya College
for me. So I had go up and down the elevators several times
of Engineering throughout the day. I had 2 mentors assigned to me other
than my colleagues in the SCM team. I met them at least
Stream: Mechanical once every day to update them about my progress and ask
for guidance. We had an hour for lunch break which all of
Work Ex: Tecnimont Ltd us interns spent in cafeteria to eat and then later for a walk
outside the office premises.
My working hours were spent either in discussions with the SCM team or for data crunching and brain
storming in my cabin. Most of the times I left office at around 5:30; in some rare cases I had to wait till 8:00
when I had to discuss project with the SCM team.
❖ What are the challenges faced during Internship?
The first month of the internship was spent completely for data collection. I needed existing sales and
forecast data from SAP databases and individual demand planners of the SCM team. As the SCM team was
already busy with their day to day work, my requests for data were put on hold and so I had to take constant
follow-ups to make sure that I got the data on time.
It took time to understand the scope and objective of the project.
The terminologies used in every company is very different as compared to what is discussed in the academics
as college (For ex. SKUs are called Articles in Welspun). It took time to get used to the lingo used in office.
