Chapter 9:  Becoming a PR






                You have 180 days to inform the government of  you r mailing address after you
                immigrate. If they don’t receive you r address within the time-          rame indicated, you
                will have to apply for a PR Card. Applying for a PR Card has a $50 proc essing fee.




             To be eligible for a PR Card, you need to


                    Be a Canadian permanent resident
                    Submit your application in Canada

             If you are outside Canada, you will first have to       apply for a PRTD and then, on ce you
             have arrived in Canada, you can apply for a PR Card.



             Keeping your Canadian permanent resident status

             To maintain your Canadian permanent resident status, you  need to                reside in Canada
             for at least 730 days during a five-     ear period . These “residency days” do       not  need to  be

             continuous and, in certain cases, som e of  you r                                               can count
             towards this number.


             Applying for a Social Insurance Number (SIN)

             As a new Canadian permanent resident, on e of  the first things you ’ll need to            do  after
