BEYOND BASICS

were going to do this time! On the long trip home, it was “woulda,
coulda, shoulda”! Call it perseverance or stupidity, I never gave up!

As a Red Belt, I entered my first Kata (forms) competition. There
was only one division which included White to Black Belts, male &
female, and all ages. The good news, I placed third, the bad news,
           only first place was awarded!

During these years I would experience “mental blackouts”! In other

The training mindset is a more relaxed
                           state than the performance mindset

words, I would have to ask my classmates whether I did the form
           completely or correctly or not.
Analyzing the “why” of these blackouts allowed for the realization
and formulation of the five stages of performance. Performance
Mode commonly referred to as "Stage Fright" happens when
performing at a high level and then the adrenaline kicks in. When
that happens, the performance has to be on “auto-pilot”! If not,
stopping or having a conscious thought can throw off the entire
           performance.

Stage One: Conscious Thought, Conscious Action: Learning
                             Stage. Action requires Conscious Thought.

Stage Two Conscious Thought, Subconscious Action:
                             Practice Stage. Semi-automatic subconscious
action and muscle memory developed through
                             constant practice still require Conscious
                             Thought.
