BEYOND BASICS
Stage Three Unconscious Thought, Automatic Action:
Dream Stage. Automatic action developed
through muscle memory and constant
repetition. The saying, “… you can do it in your
sleep!” captures this stage perfectly and it’s
where “mental blackouts” occur.
Stage Four Mental Awareness, Automatic Action:
Spectator Stage. Aware of automatic actions
with no control over the actions. It’s similar to
an “out of body” experience.
It’s like putting a car in reverse before
putting it in drive.
Stage Five: Mental Control, Automatic Action. Remote
Control Stage. Automatic actions with
awareness and complete control of the actions.
Understanding these five stages of performance gave birth to the
Practice as You Perform concept. I discovered that those
“blackouts” were because my training and performance mindsets
were not the same.
The training mindset is a more relaxed state than the performance
mindset where “stage fright” and “auto” mode takes effect.
Practice with the performance mindset regardless of whether
training "all-out" or slowly. It's the performance mindset that must
be engaged during training that will overcome performance anxiety!
We can all agree that Maximum Efficiency, Minimum Effort cannot
be achieved without Economy of Motion. Unnecessary movements
