BEYOND BASICS
does not make a forest but a forest has many trees! A single
technique does not make an entire concept, a single concept can
create many techniques.
Concepts seek to understand the “Why” and can be applied to the
entire scope of martial arts from Basics to Forms to Sparring to Self
Defense! A single concept can encompass the entire spectrum of
the study of martial arts.
What are "Concepts"?
They were kinda long, boring, and low
scoring matches.
Systems! Concepts are just a systematic method for something like
Defense, Kicking, Blocking, etc. A System should be easy to
understand, follow, and implement. If you have a curriculum, that's
a system! There's nothing magical about systems. Every teacher
whether they realize it or not have some sort of system by which
they teach.
I am a Defensive fighter because any attack has to create an
opening that can be taken advantage of. This doesn't mean that I
never attacked. Sometimes an attack was to "bait" an opponent
to counter-attack creating an opening. Touching or crossing my
Critical Distance Line would also prompt an attack.
The Defensive Press concept was used to force an attack by
defensively pressing forward making an opponent uncomfortable
enough to attack thus creating an opening.
Competing against another defensive fighter was like playing the
“First One to Blink” game. They were kinda long, boring, and low
scoring matches.
