BEYOND BASICS
Keeping an opponent Off-Balance Mentally, Physically, or both was
my main strategy! Many of the concepts covered in this book speak
specifically to this strategy. For example, a sweep would Off-
Balance my opponent physically. A good sweep would also affect
them mentally as they found themselves on the floor not realizing
what actually happened. Off Balancing someone shakes their
confidence. Physically they begin to question the stability of their
stance and Mentally their abilities. The more they question
themselves, the more they will have doubts and hesitate giving
you the advantage.
My strategy is to exploit a strength.
To keep them off-balance mentally, the strategy was to nullify their
best technique (Exploiting Weakness) or make them perceive that
I had greater abilities than I had (Perception Speed). Nullifying their
best technique made them try harder creating a telegraph making
it easier to counter. This will also create doubt in their best
technique and to my advantage, will get them to go to their bench
and try a second-string technique.
Creating a false perception can cause them to take themselves out
of their comfortable range causing them to doubt whether they
can launch an effective attack because they’d have to enter into
my now perceived range.
A common misconception states, “find a weakness and exploit it”!
My strategy is to exploit a strength. Opponents will usually lead
with their strongest techniques and seldom a weaker one. This
