BEYOND BASICS

                                CHAPTER 3

                                    THE “WHIP”

                                          My years of practicing and
analyzing forms have led me to
                                          formulate the concept of the
“whip” as applied to strikes and
kicks. A whip has three basic parts:
the handle, the thong, and the tip.
These can be correlated to the hips
                                          (handle), arm/leg (thong), and the
hand/foot (tip). The actions of an
actual whip use the handle to
                                          initiate the strike, the thong
uncoils to the target, and the tip is used to strike the target. With
a strike or kick, the actions are the same. The hips initiate the
strike, the arm/leg “uncoils” to the target, and the hand/foot
           strikes the target.

This simple rotation can be applied to any
open or closed hand strikes or blocks.

The “Whip” for hand strikes is comprised of four component
           concepts.
