Expansion and Contraction is a Bonus concept which will also help
with the “Whip”, providing better structure for all of your strikes
and blocks, and is coordinated with your breathing.
…the “Whip” can increase both speed
and power of techniques
Simply stated, Expansion is performed by relaxing the shoul-
ders while squeezing the shoulder blades. For example, with
an Inside to Outside Block, squeezing the shoulder blades will
pull both arms further back, elongate the spine for better
posture, and providing a stronger block by engaging the back
muscles to enhance its power.
Contraction is relaxing the shoulder blades allowing the
shoulders to move forward. From the Expansion position,
