BEYOND BASICS
“ ”
This is a tongue in cheek name for
this next concept as it’s a
modification of the basic striking
and blocking techniques. It’s
usually taught to advanced
students after they’re achieved a
certain level of proficiency and
“joined the club”!
This is the thong part of the Whip
movement. The movement of the
thong moves in a wave-like
motion. The “Secret Handshake” seeks to emulate that wave-like
motion with the arm.
The “Whip” and its wave-like motion can also be applied to kicking
as well.
Bill “Superfoot” Wallace’s amazing
kicking technique is the perfect
example of just how this works!
Notice Bill’s kick chamber! The
midpoint of his shin is aligned
between his centerline and his
opponent's target. His Roundhouse
kick travels around one side of that
centerline to the target, his Hook
kick travels around the other side,
and his Side kick travels directly
down the centerline.
With his rotation point at mid-shin, his kick will travel less distance
and is quicker because the arc of the kick is smaller! How to apply
the “Whip” to kicking is discussed in Kicking Concepts.
