students’ introduction and blueprint for transitioning into the working world on their own terms. This was also my introduction into indie-publishing.
We launched our book with the help of a consultant, hitting 14 Amazon Bestseller Categories and thought we had made it. A month later, the book was at the bottom of the charts and was having no impact on the lives of students. We were heartbroken to say the least. We had poured our souls into this book, gotten phenomenal reviews, but had spent no time plan- ning on how we would actually market the book. If I could go back in time, I would have spent as much time working on the marketing plan as we spent on the writing of the book but we’ll get to that later.
Despite our failed book launch, life was good. I made 6-figures as a sales engineer for a tech company. My job consisted of explaining complicated tech products to non-technical people. I found this to be interesting and extremely valuable for my future as I now write to you about Amazon Ads.
A year into the job, I quickly realized that my self-growth was limited by the fact that someone else owned my weekdays. I loved the company but knew I had to leave. I didn’t tell anyone what my plans were, but I was going to become a videographing influencer, just what the world needed. I’ll never forget the disappointment in my dad’s voice when I told him I was going to leave the well-paying job I worked so hard to get.
My mom works for a major airline, giving me free flights around the world which would make for great content until I turned 24. I was 23 and this left me one year to make this dream come true. One problem, just a month in, I quickly realized how little I desired to share every detail of my life with the world over Instagram. (Just so you know I’m not joking, you can still find some of those early videos @storiesofalifelived). Around the same time, something happened in the world that prevented any further travel for a period of time. I’ll let you figure out what that one was but it rhymes with Bovid-WineQueen.
