INTRODUCTION
It was now 2020 and luckily I had saved 50% of my salary that first year out of school and was now living on that in Montanita, Ecuador, where $2.50 gets you a full fish dinner. I still couldn’t complain, my life was filled with good Wi-Fi, great surfing, and extreme social distancing as one of the only residents at a local hostel in a foreign country—catering to my strong, introverted tendencies.
I started to try different things to figure out how to make money, one of which was learning how to run Amazon Ads for our previously failed book. After some hours of YouTube and some quick successes, a few fellow authors took note and asked if I would do the same for them. Referrals came in quicker than I could keep up with, to the point where I actually built out a python program to set up authors’ ads for me and allow me to take on more clients. Things were incredible for a while.

Then something changed. A good friend recommended I reach out to a few of the authors who stuck with us through the rising costs and actually continued to thrive. He had a point: why were some authors, despite los- ing money on their ads, still continuing to work with us?
Phone call after phone call, something became very clear.
Two types of authors can and will continue to run profitable Amazon Ads for the foreseeable future:
