Mom and Dad were not so sure this happiness would last when M
got older and started school. Would she be excluded, even bullied,
because of being different?
They wondered if M's humming could be a physical ailment.
Perhaps there was a blockage in her throat? They took her to a
children's doctor — a pediatrician. She examined M from tip to
toe. She felt M's wrist with her two middle fingers and took her
pulse. "90 beats per minute. Perfect." Then she put her ear to
M's chest and listened to her heartbeat. "Lub-dub. Lub-dub. Lub-
dub. Very regular, M."
