Information should be accessible to all but targeted to its audience; resources should be tai-
lored accordingly
A coordinated approach to both internal and external communication is vital
Corporate information
This should be:
Relevant to the audience
Concise
Accessible
Timely
Delivered using appropriate channels
Complemented by appropriate feedback mechanisms
When issuing information ask a few simple questions:
Who needs to know?
What do they need to know?
When do they need to know it?
Conversely always ask ‘What do I need to know?’
Tools and activities
It is important to identify the tools and activities that are most appropriate to communicating the
key messages to the relevant audiences. Tools and activities need to be tailored to the level of
time and human and financial resources available.
Resources and timescales
The key rules to observe here are always to deliver what you promise and never over promise.
Resources and timescales should be used to set legitimate levels of expectations and outline the
case for more dedicated resources.
Evaluation and amendment
It is important to perform an audit to assess the effectiveness of the strategy with both our inter-
nal and external audiences. Use of open questions with appropriate prompts and benchmarks is
advisable, followed by discussion of the results to inform any amendments to the strategy
