VALLEY SUNSET DISTRICT
ANNUAL REPORT 2023-2024
Valley Sunset District’s theme for 2023-2024 is Meeting the Challenge through Advocacy and
Leadership and, indeed, our members have strived to do that. Although our membership is not
large, we are active and involved.
Valley Sunset District is proud to have two nominees for state office. Anne Marie Johnson is a
candidate for president and Denise Luckhurst is a candidate for treasurer of CFBPW.
We began our year with our June Planning meeting where each club and the MALs volunteered
to host a district meeting. We scheduled dates, tentative locations and a theme for each
meeting.
The annual Women of Achievement Luncheon was the focus of our Fall Conference where we
honored former Los Angeles City Council member and long-time supporter of women’s equality,
Joy Picus. Club honorees included community activist Laurie Bleick; author Rosemary Lord and
president of Conejo Valley BPW Lydia Steadman.
Our Annual Holiday Party was hosted by Hollywood BPW where members enjoyed lunch in an
“old Hollywood” setting at the Smoke House Restaurant in Burbank.
The Winter Conference, hosted by our Members-at-Large, included a focus on the March prima-
ry election. Our guest speaker, Susan Schwartz, is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar
Association’s Judicial Evaluation Committee, which evaluates and rates all candidates for judi-
cial office. Led by our district Public Policy chair, Elaine Aftergut, members reviewed CFBPW
Public Policy Statement and made recommendations for changes/additions.
Continuing with our advocacy theme, the guest speaker at our Annual Conference was Katie
Duberg, Political Organizing Director for the California Work and Family Coalition. Also, that
day we remembered our friend and member, Past State President Jackie Melvin. Hosted by the
Conejo Valley Club, our meeting was held at the lovely Palm Garden Hotel.
Valley Sunset District officers for 2024-25 are: Rosemary Enzer, president; Cherrl Lou Jacob-
son, vice-president; Marcia Jackman, secretary; Sandy Thompson, treasurer; and Sandra
Sanders, parliamentarian.
Leadership and involvement are highly valued by Valley Sunset District with members partici-
pating at the state, national and international levels. Two members, Anne Marie Johnson and
Sandy Thompson, serve as members of the CFBPW Executive Committee; Lynn Brandstater is
the Nominations Chair and three members are Standing Chairs. VSD members also participate
in committees and activities at the National level and member Sandy Thompson attended the
CSW meeting in New York. Jackie Melvin was a member of the BPW International Arts and Cul-
ture Committee.
Nine new members have joined Valley Sunset District this year. However, our membership has
decreased. This is a topic of discussion and planning for the coming year, as we continue to
Meet the Challenge. Rosemary Enzer, President
