P. 7

We all know, I hope, that we should examine our
breasts regularly, looking for lumps and irregularities, and
that regular mammograms are sensible things to have too.
BPW UK are trying to find out the range of ages at which
mammograms are available in BPW countries to build up
a picture of where there are gaps in such helpful preventa-
        tive treatments.

I also knew that a well fitting bra was also a useful
thing to have, but I had no idea that the correct bra would
even help to prevent you getting breast cancer.

                   But, I do now!

Dr Lewis is involved with a company which has de-
signed a bra (which is for sale) for this purpose, and dur-
ing the talk she explained in very great detail just how it
        does that.

We also found out why my friend is suffering so
much ... because triple negative breast cancer lacks 3 highly significant receptors [hence the
name] to fight cancer, thus it has fewer treatment options and poorer outcomes. I dare not
say that to my friend, but I suspect she is quite aware of it already.

Supporting Dr Anastasia, IFBPW 2nd VP Membership, Dr Giuseppina Seidita (Italy),
and Marcia Bull from BPW Brazil, then spoke on projects they had been involved in, and we
learnt that there is also a book available on the subject.

Finally, for those women who think that colour and fashion in
their choice of bra choice is the most important choice to make... be
warned! I was delighted to find out that the under-wiring in bras has
a very deleterious effect on breast health and because I have always
found underwired bras the most uncomfortable bra anyone could
wear, I have never worn them at all!

So, unfashionable as I might have been all these years, I
found out that I WAS doing one thing right at least!

It was a thoroughly informative and entertaining evening, full
of good facts and humour shared with our BPW members worldwide.
We thank Anastasia, Giuseppina and Marcia for sharing their vast knowledge with us!
