BPW CONFERENCE DAY - SATURDAY 16 MARCH 2024
Conference began with warm welcomes from President Jo and Sue Holtom representing
the SEW Region. A very novel session with wellness specialist Chris Briggs showed us
how to find those spots which can help us relax or energise.

Attendees were keen to receive this from Chris Briggs’ presentation
Our first conference session centred on advocacy with the title Should misogyny be
considered a hate crime? Since we approved the motion on misogyny at conference
2023, this has become a very topical issue, with the rise of the Incel culture, Andrew Tate
and his disturbing online influence on young men, and reports of misogyny and harass-
ment in our police forces and fire services around the UK.
With our conference located next to the aviation hub at Filton, our STEM session was a
fascinating mix of women aviation experts covering the future of aviation fuels, electrical
vertical take-off aircraft which could become the future for commuters connecting airports
to city centres, and the growth in the UK drones industry.
Our Gordon Holmes founder’s lecture was given this year by His Majesty’s Lord Lieu-
tenant for Bristol, Peaches Golding, OBE, CStJ. She gave us an insight into the many
types of events she is involved with in the city, but especially interesting was how she and
her staff plan for visits by members of the Royal Family.
Our post lunch Green and Sustainable Panel was led by Siiri Puttonen, Chair of the
BPW Europe Green and Sustainable Working Group. Kukka Lehmusvirta from the Finnish
Women’s Association, and President of BPW Vantaa, spoke to us about the future of green
aviation, particularly SAF – Sustainable Aviation Fuels – which could reduce CO2 emis-
sions by up to 80%.
Siiri spoke about the Resolution “Together for a green and sustainable world” which was
subsequently passed at the Presidents’ meeting in Rome the following week. The Resolu-
tion calls on BPW members to work together for a more sustainable earth and contains
guidelines for BPW future working and events planning.

She reminded us of Earth Day celebrated on April 22 , when we can make our pledges to
do (at least) one thing to help our planet Mother Earth survive. To get involved see:
