The Board of Directors Meeting was held on Friday morning. The highlight of that
meeting was the speeches presented by the nominees for office. I was honored to be asked to
perform the important job of timekeeper.
Friday afternoon was devoted to a field
trip. Just like back in elementary school, we all boarded
two buses and off we went to the Alice Paul Institute.
We were provided box lunches which we attempted to
eat while the bus was turning, starting and stopping. Ac-
cording to their website, the Alice Paul Institute is the
birthplace of equal rights advocate Alice Stokes Paul
(1885-1977). The 200-year-old house currently resides
on 6.5 acres in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. The Alice
Paul Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to
educating the public about the life and work of Alice Paul
suffragist, author of the Equal Rights Amendment,
Alice Paul Institute
founder of the National Woman's Party, and a lifelong ac-
tivist for women's equality. We toured the house and the
property, relaxed and did activities on the patio, and listened to a lecture about the life of Alice
Paul and her contribution to the suffrage movement.
Saturday was full of excitement, eating and lots of white. Members were asked to
wear white in honor of the suffragists. President Megan called the General Assembly to order
just as the lights went out. But the hotel generator kicked in and we had sufficient light to con-
tinue. The online participants were knocked off line but that was quickly solved by our very ca-
pable IT helper. We continued on with the business of the Federation. Trudy Waldroop, Na-
tional Bylaws Chair and California Federation member, did an excellent job presenting the by-
law and policy and procedure changes. Voting for officers was done electronically. We ate our
buffet lunches while voting for one office at a time. California’s Maria DeSousa was elected Vice
President of Membership. Congratulations to Maria.
