HOW CAN THE PUBLIC INFLUENCE THE
What is NHS Citizen?
NHS Citizen originated in 2012/13 with the aim of ensuring that people and com-
munities are able to contribute to health policy development and how NHS ser-
vices are commissioned, designed, and delivered.
The NHS Constitution states that ‘the NHS belongs to the people’ and the NHS
Citizen programme aims to embody these principles on the basis that services
shaped by people, (especially those with lived experience), are more likely to be
needs-led and patient-centred, resulting in better outcomes.
NHS Citizen is overseen by a national Advisory Group comprising representatives
from:
NHS England ,
other Arms Length Bodies (ALBs), such as
Healthwatch England,
Care Quality Commission (CQC), and
NHS Digital
four Patient and Public Voice (PPV) partners.
How can I get involved?
Local Citizen Panels have been established across the country and make use of a
variety of approaches to engaging with the public including social media and digital
channels.
The Panels focus on a wide range of health-related issues including access to care,
use of digital consultations, waiting times, emergency care and long Covid.
