BPW SYNE
The Candle Lighting Ceremony
“The candle lighting ceremony is a tribute to BPW International which unites women
around the world. Although its members speak in many languages and live in countries
with differing traditions they share the same determination of purpose.”
(an extract from the Candle Lighting Ceremony that was first devised in 1941)
Following in my mother’s footsteps I joined Ponteland BPW club in 1987; though I had
attended several social events prior to this, the most notable being the candle lighting
ceremony.
So imagine my surprise when a few months ago I received a notification that I needed to go
to the main sorting office to collect a parcel. Luckily the closing time had changed so I didn’t
have to be there before 8.30 am.
On looking inside I found that I had been sent a cook book, entitled
“Ponteland B+PW International Recipes”.
Inside was the dedication;
“Ponteland Business and Professional Women’s Club present
International Night Recipes.
International night recipes, suitable for buffet entertainment.
Collected and used by present members of Ponteland club and
their friends.
This is the third edition, produced by Mrs. Marion Barclay to
st
celebrate the 21 birthday of Ponteland B. and P. W.”
The book contained many recipes from around the world from people I had known, however
it was the first two recipes that really had me giggling and as I read I could again hear
Marion reading them;
Recipe for preserving children
• Into field pour children and dogs, allow to mix well
• Pour over pebbles till lightly frothy
• When children are nicely brown, cool in warm water.
• Leave to dry
• Serve with milk and freshly baked gingerbread
Preserving a husband
• Be careful in your selection, do not choose too young, and take only such as have been
raised in a good moral atmosphere.
• Some insist on keeping them in a pickle while others keep them in hot water. Bear in mind
this makes them sour, hard and usually bitter.
