G20 Summit: Building a Just World and
a Sustainable Planet
The G20 Summit took place in Rio de Janeiro on 18 and 19 November 2024.
Here are some highlights of the Leaders meeting and Declaration.
In the city that is the birthplace of the Sustainable Development Agenda, the leaders
reaffirmed their commitment to building a fair world and a sustainable planet, priori-
tizing the fight against inequalities in all their dimensions, without leaving anyone
behind. The Leaders' Declaration establishes actions towards concrete results, based
on the priorities of the Brazilian G20 presidency:
- social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty
- sustainable development, energy transitions and climate action
- the reform of global governance institutions.
The Declaration includes the achievements of the Brazilian presidency throughout the
year - the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, the Task Force on a Global
Mobilization against Climate Change and the Call to Action on Global Governance
Reform and recognises the importance of addressing the inequalities in the world to
achieve success.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, hosting the Summit in his remarks said
“This year, we held more than 140 meetings in 15 Brazilian cities. We have again
issued consensus declarations by almost all the working groups. We have learned
that the greater the interaction between the Sherpa and Finance Tracks, the greater
and more significant the results of our work will be. We have worked hard, even
though we know that we have only scratched the surface of the profound challenges
facing the world,”
The Women20 (W20) Summit was held in October where the W20 Communique 2024
which brings together recommendations on gender, equity and women's economic
empowerment was delivered to the G20 Presidency.
This has been a challenging year on many fronts. The need for strong partnership work-
ing between countries and reform has become ever more critical to create the ener-
gy and innovation needed to accelerate efforts to find sustainable solutions and
build a more peaceful world. We know it must be a collective effort and an inclusive
effort – gender equality must be at the heart of all the activities and decision mak-
ing to build a more just world and a sustainable planet.
The lack of progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals has been
acknowledged by the G20 Leaders and they recognise that inequality within and
among countries is at the root of most global challenges that the world faces and is
aggravated by them. They have undertaken to accelerate efforts and reaffirmed
their strong commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals.
