it would pass by his home in Winslow, Arizona. Wearing a red MAFA (Make America Fair Again) cap, Kingman said, “It’s not fair that rich folks contribute zero to Social Security after the cap on earnings. People like me making $38,000 a year pay that tax their entire work lives. Meanwhile, people making more than $129,000 get off scot-free. It’s a scandal. There are no other words for it.”
Laura Cortez, 72, joined the caravan in Gallup, New Mexico. A recently retired loan officer at TBK Bank, Cortez spent her career helping immigrants secure loans. “Don’t be confused by my name. I’m American through and through. I changed my last name from Johnson to Cortez when I was in college because I had so many immigrant friends who were treated like invaders. It was so unfair and made me so mad, I did
it to express my solidarity. I’m walking for the same reason, to make Social Security secure for everyone who comes behind me.”
When the caravan arrives at Route 66’s end in Chicago, it will have covered 2,448 miles. From Chicago, it plans to travel the remaining 700 miles by Uber. More than 10,000 Uber drivers have volunteered
to drive caravan participants to the steps of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. Uber USA offered to foot the gas, maintenance and food bills for its volunteer drivers. A company spokesperson said, “It’s only right.”
When the president was asked about the caravan, he was quick to respond, “Frankly, I think it’s a fake caravan and the people are actors paid by PocahSoros. We’re watching it carefully, though, because Hannity told me there are drug dealers and Muslims in there, too.”
