The Associated Press reported this morning that a caravan of 4,000 Americans is making its way east across the United States on Route 66. Outside Tulsa, Oklahoma, reporters on the scene describe a congenial crowd of all ages walking approximately five miles per day toward their destination, Washington, D.C.
The caravan set out from Barstow, California after President Trump’s GOP accomplices, led by Mitch-the-Bitch McConnell, walked off the job last week, refusing to vote on legislation that would remove the earnings cap on Social Security. Workers pay 6.2% of their earnings to Social Security until their income reaches a maximum. For 2018, the maximum amount of taxable earnings is $128,480, which will increase to $132,900 in 2019. For several years, middle-class taxpayers, a few actuaries and many Democrats have challenged the premise of the cap, and deemed it unfair because it applied only to one class of workers.
Jane Sullivan, 37, helped organize the caravan in Barstow where
she is a nurse at Desert Valley Hospital in nearby Victorville. When asked what motivated her to action, Sullivan said, “I’m not close to retirement but I looked in the mirror recently and saw the writing
on the wall. At the rate we’re going, there won’t be any Social Security for me, not to mention my kids or grandkids, when the time comes. What’s 6.5% to someone making a half a million dollars a year? I say, pocket change, pure and simple.”
