This week a coalition of seven states and two advocacy organizations sued the Trump administration over its efforts to roll back — actually kill — nutritional standards in school lunch programs. The rules were part of the 2010 Healthy, Hungry-Free Kids Act, a crucial component of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign.
Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue called the rollback “Make School Meals Great Again” which will allow kids to consume an unlimited amount of salt, no fruit or vegetables, no whole grains, an unlimited amount of fat, and all of the tooth-decaying Mountain Dew they want
to drink.
Asked about the rationale behind the redirection, Perdue claimed that healthy food costs too much, kids were not eating it and it ended up in the trash. He also reported that new scientific evidence showed that kids were losing weight at dangerous levels, causing them to look like “prisoners of war.”
“I can’t speak for everyone, but I can tell you that my grandbabies
kick and scream every day when they come home from school because ‘the food sucks’ as my grandboy tells it,” Perdue related. “He told
me last week that he had to sit during gym class because he was too weak from the bowl of fruit he was forced to eat at lunch.”
