Board of Education in 2010. Taking on the Civil War, Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Movement, board members made some striking editorial decisions.
Under the new rules, students are required to read the inaugural address by Confederate President Jefferson Davis who maintained that the Civil War was fought over states rights, not slavery; in fact, the edited text claims that Davis never uttered the word slavery. Revised textbooks portray Robert E. Lee as a Civil War hero, while vilifying General Ulysses S. Grant as a stumbling drunk. The KKK and Jim Crow laws no longer appear in Texas school textbooks because these dark periods in American history are, in Governor Greg Abbott’s words, “Nobody’s business. Anybody who uses the guise of fairness to rob us of our freedom will get a uniquely Texan response: Come and take it.”
Asked by Mr. Hannity if he supported the removal of democracy and its variants from school textbooks, the president replied, “Absolutely, in all 49 states. Democracy, sham-ocracy. It’s an old idea that should be taken off the air. A total ratings disaster!
