As with all of the president’s staffing choices, Mr. Vitiello came with baggage that did not travel well. In 2012, one of his tweets suggested that the Democratic Party should be renamed the “liberalcratic party” or the “Neo-Klanist party.” Taking a cue from the president himself and all of his nominees, Mr. Vitiello confessed that “he was trying to make a joke.”
Trump has not yet named another nominee to head ICE. An unnamed source inside the organization overheard the president talking to himself about his immigration guru, Stephen Miller, who could be a
top contender due to his explosive personality and volatile temper. Reportedly, the president has commented on more than one occasion that he is sometimes afraid of Mr. Miller, making him an ideal candidate to lead ICE.
