At last night’s vice presidential debate at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, moderator Susan Page asked:
“Vice President Pence, you were in the front row at a Rose Garden event 11 days ago, at what seems to have been a super-spreader event for senior administration and congressional officials, no social distancing, few masks, and now a cluster of coronavirus cases among those who were there. How can you expect Americans to follow the administration safety guidelines to protect themselves from COVID when you were at the White House have not been doing so?
Mr. Pence replied, “Well, the American people have demonstrated over the last eight months that when the president talks, they are willing to put the health of their families, and their neighbors and people they don't even know second or third. President Trump and I have great confidence in the American people’s ability to take care of themselves without government involvement or interference. At the height of the epidemic when a couple of thousand people were dying per day in New York and California, we surged resources to Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Florida where our supporters might not vote unless we took the initiative and asked for a favor. We told the American people that they didn’t have to do anything or make any sacrifice over something as common and minor as the flu. Today, the Trump Administration leadership is on clear display. We’ve lost – what – only 200,000 people, when the number could have been two million or more.
