Donald Trump held his first public rally at the White House on the
South Lawn today. Electioneering on government property violates
the Hatch Act. The president and vice president are exempt; however, they are subject to the act’s criminal provisions which prohibit the involvement of federal employees in political activity. The rally was described as an “official” event and “peaceful protest for law and order.” No one could be found on the premises to corroborate that explanation.
When the president appeared on the balcony of the Blue Room, he was wearing a blue terrycloth bathrobe and matching light blue facemask, which he immediately tore off and threw into the cheering crowd.
The few hundred attendees were decked out in MAGA hats and
“Back the Blue” pro-police T-shirts supplied by the event’s organizers. Few masks were seen in the packed crowd, standing shoulder to shoulder. Unlike most Trump rallies, which are overwhelmingly white, this crowd was primarily Black and Latino; reportedly these “supporters” were paid handsomely to attend.
In spite of federal regulations that prohibit using taxpayer-funded military bands for campaign events, the president shamelessly ordered the United States Marine Corps Band to participate and play “America” from “West Side Story.” The song addresses the immense differences between white and non-white Americans. It is sung by groups of Puerto Rican girls who came from San Juan to live in America. The lyrics compare the so-called “American Dream” with their actual experiences on New York’s West Side.
