User Demographics
Research show pet ownership varies across many demographics.
Age
Pet ownership tends to be higher among younger adults (ages 25-34), driven by
life-style and companionship needs and increased disposable income. However,
middle-aged individuals (35-54) also show significant ownership statistics. The
older age groups often adopt pets for companionship and family enjoyment, with
a notable trend towards small and low-maintenance breeds (ISPCA, 2023).
Gender
Research indicates that women are more likely to engage in pet adoption than
men, often taking on the primary caregiving role for pets.
Location
Urban areas have seen a rise in pet adoptions, with notable trends towards
smaller dog breeds suitable for apartment living. Research indicates that urban
areas, particularly Dublin, show higher rates of pet ownership compared to rural
areas, where adoption challenges may include fewer shelters and vet services.
Rural living individuals might adopt pets for functional purposes, such as farm
animals or hunting dogs.
Households
Families with children often adopt pets for childhood development and
companionship, while single people may adopt for companionship or emotional
support.
Socioeconomic Status
Households with higher income levels tend to adopt pets more frequently. There
is a growing trend of “premium pet care” among affluent demographics. Middle-
income households are more likely to adopt pets due to affordability regarding
care; however, higher-income families also adopt but may focus on specific
breeds or rescue organisations. (Dogs Trust, 2023)
