ELEGANT DEBUTANTES

On Friday, February 22, 2019, Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Incorporation, hosted its 61st Annual Debutante Presentation and
Ball in the North Hall of the Von Braun Center.
Over 900 guests enjoyed the exquisite decorations of majestic columns draped in
white fabric and adorned with greenery and beautiful flowers in shades of pink
and green. Elegant centerpieces were placed on each table. This year’s theme was
“Majestic Memories, Exemplifying Excellence”.
Basileus Cheryl Davis welcomed debutantes, escorts, parents, special guests and
friends. She also introduced Dr. Terrance Vickerstaff and Soror Erica Washington
to present this year’s thirty-three honorees. The Debutante Presentation and
Ball culminated the Debutante Season which consisted of training sessions, social
graces workshops, community service projects, the Hobby Talent Showcase and a
Multi-Media contest.
This year’s first place scholarship winner, Miss Brittany N. Okweye from
Huntsville High School will receive $6000. Miss Sydney S. Greene, the 2nd place
winner, is a Madison Academy student and will receive a $5000 scholarship. Our
third place winner, Miss Alexandria D. Lewis, attends St. John Paul II Catholic
High School and she will receive $4500. The Eva Cathey Award recipient was
Miss Ayiana C. McDow. Debutante bracelets were presented to each of the
debutantes by the Ball Chairman, Ms. Karen Scruggs and Co-Chairman, Ms.
Heather Scruggs. Each debutante also received an engraved jewelry box.
Following the presentation and ball, the debutantes and their escorts performed
the traditional and graceful cotillion dance. A toast was given by City Councilman
Devyn Keith. After the toast, the Debutantes and Presenters had their first dance.
